Reebok Taps Bismark for Global Media Pitch
NEW YORK–Reebok International has hired consultancy Bismark Corp. in Dennis, Mass., to conduct a global media review for its $100 million-plus account. Agencies contacted include Ogilvy & Mather Worldwide, D’Arcy Masius Benton & Bowles and McCann-Erickson Worldwide, said sources. McCann will not participate due to a conflict with client Nike overseas. Executives at those agencies declined to comment. A Reebok representative confirmed that the sneaker maker had started its search for a new media buying agency nearly two months after splitting with former shop Leo Burnett in Chicago. The review, which involves a ‘pretty shortlist’ of shops, according to the representative, is being overseen by vice president of advertising Brenda Goodell. The representative said he was unaware Bismark had been retained. Consultancy principal Bill Weilbacher could not be reached for comment. Burnett, which handled Reebok in the U.S. and overseas, has already bought much of the 1997 media.
Young & Rubicam Retains Army Account
NEW YORK–Young & Rubicam here has retained the estimated $80 million advertising account of the U.S. Army, sources said. The other finalist in the review was Wells Rich Greene BDDP in New York. Neither Army contracting officer Kathy Dobeck nor Y&R could be reached for comment. WRG declined comment. Sources said the new contract is for a one-year period with four one-year renewal options.
Ante in Schwab Review Could Grow Larger
NEW YORK–The three agencies vying for the $18-20 million account of Charles Schwab’s electronic trading unit in San Francisco could have the opportunity to handle a larger portion of the $85 million business, sources said. Mendelsohn/Zien, Los Angeles; Blazing Paradigm, San Francisco; and Montgomery North, the new San Francisco-based unit of Kirshenbaum Bond & Partners, are finalists in the pitch. Rubin Postaer and Associates, Santa Monica, Calif., handles media buying for the entire account.
FTD to Hire New Agency This Week
NEW YORK–Florists’ Transworld Delivery in Downers Grove, Ill., is expected to select a new advertising agency this week, a FTD representative said. The incumbent, Grey Advertising, which had handled creative and media duties, resigned the account last week, citing philosophical differences with client management. Shops that have been contacted by FTD president Bob Norton over the past few months include DiNoto Lee in New York; Foote, Cone & Belding in Chicago; Cleveland agency Meldrum & Fewsmith Advertising; D’Arcy Masius Benton & Bowles, Troy, Mich.; and J. Walter Thompson in Detroit, sources said. FTD spent around $15 million on advertising last year, according to Competitive Media Reporting.
