Hill, Holliday: Back to Square One
DALLAS–Executives at Square One have held discussions in recent weeks with various suitors, including Boston-based Hill, Holliday, Connors, Cosmopulos, about a possible acquisition, confirmed Square One partner Tom Hansen. The $30 million Dallas agency, which was a finalist in the recent Miller Lite pitch, was seeking partners to provide extra account service and creative infrastructure. “If we [had] gotten the Miller Lite business, we would have had to show a greater depth of resources,” said Hansen. For now, Hansen feels the shop will remain independent. “We talked to quite a few people. Since we didn’t get the business, there’s no reason to partner with anybody.” Industry sources said Square One and Hill, Holliday partnered on the Miller Lite pitch. Hill, Holliday officials declined comment.
Allied Domecq Promotes Marketing Exec
BOSTON–Allied Domecq Retailing in Randolph, Mass., has named Syl Saller to the newly created post of director of marketing and development, effective next month. Saller, who is currently vice president of marketing for Togo’s Eateries, a Cupertino, Calif.-based chain of sandwich shops, will report to chief executive officer Stephen Alexander. Allied Domecq is the parent company of Dunkin’ Donuts, Baskin Robbins and Togo’s Eateries.
Maine Tries to Curb Smoking
BOSTON–Officials for the state of Maine last week unveiled the latest ads in its anti-smoking campaign. Creative Design & Marketing in Portland, Maine, crafted three 30-second television spots featuring state residents affected by tobacco. Supporting the commercial are 60-second radio spots and print ads appearing in the weekend editions of Maine newspapers. The campaign will run for six weeks, according to Dr. Dora Mills, director of Maine’s Bureau of Public Health.
Cone’s Cause Continues to Grow
BOSTON–Cone Communications here has added Time Warner, New York, Johnson & Johnson, New Brunswick, N.J., and ConAgra, Omaha, Neb., to its cause-related marketing practice. The agency will provide strategic counsel on areas from philanthropy to community relations.
Seaport Software Docks at KGA
BOSTON–KGA Advertising in Middletown, Conn., has added Seaport Software in Mystic, Conn., to its client roster. The agency will create print ads–slated to break in the March issues of trade publications–as well as product names, collateral materials and direct mail pieces to support a customer loyalty program.
Former Ad Club Director Bresnick, 94, Dies
BOSTON–Oscar Bresnick, past director of the Advertising Club of Greater Boston and the Hatch Award committee, died last week at Massachusetts General Hospital at the age of 94. After starting his career in advertising sales at the Lawrence Eagle-Tribune, he started his own agency, Bresnick Co., in 1932.
