Lucky for the travel industry that families are dispersed to various locales. An American Express poll finds 39 percent of respondents planning to travel during the holiday season, with nearly two-thirds of these people (64 percent) citing visits to family as their foremost reason for hitting the road. Two percent said they’ll travel during the holidays “to avoid seeing family.”

Among those planning to travel, 88 percent said they’ll do so within the U.S. Seventy-four percent will drive, overlapping a bit with the 28 percent who’ll fly.
