Google is extending its ubiquitous Web advertising platform AdSense into the exploding mobile applications space.
The search behemoth has rolled out AdSense for Mobile Applications, aimed at the growing number of companies that produce apps for both Google’s own Android mobile software as well as for Apple’s iPhone. Google has already begun testing the product with several popular apps, such as the song-identification app Shazam and the local-restaurant-finder Urbanspoon.
Now, the product is available to all developers who are looking to monetize their apps with text and display ads delivered by Google. Like AdSense for publishers, which delivers contextually relevant text ads to sites large and small across the Internet, apps developers can sign up to implement AdSense for Mobile Applications via a self-serve Web interface. And also like the traditional AdSense product, developers share any associated ad revenue with Google.
The move by Google could help push mobile app advertising to a new level. Currently, many paid mobile apps are not ad-supported—while advertising on free apps is sold via networks or rep firms such as appssavvy. “We want to contribute to the growth of these mobile applications,” wrote Susan Wojcicki, Google’s vp, product management in a blog posting on Wednesday (June 24). “After all, advertisers are looking for ways to reach potential customers when they are engaged with mobile content, and application developers are looking for ways to show the best ads to their users.”
