Finalists in the “Penn a Phrase for Pennsylvania” contest, organized by tourism officials to find the state’s next slogan. They are: “Pursue happiness,” “Discover our good nature,” “Liberty’s landscape,” “Liberty loves company” and “The state of independence.” People can vote for their favorite on VisitPA.com. But there is already controversy: “Discover our good nature”—in second place at press time, with 28 percent of the vote—may be disqualified on the grounds that it is already the official slogan of central Pennsylvania’s Juniata River Valley and Vermont’s Mad River Valley. However, no one seems overly concerned (or aware) that the top vote getter, “The state of independence,” with 32 percent of the vote, is also Saab’s new tagline, developed by Lowe. Voting continues through Feb. 12.
Travel time, in minutes, on the Kennedy Expressway from downtown to O’Hare, when Shoptalk randomly checked Chicago traffic online during last Wednesday’s evening rush. But “downtown to O’Hare” reports are endangered thanks to a product- placement deal between Allstate and Clear Channel Radio. For at least the next year, the traffic reporters at all seven Clear Channel-owned stations in Chicago are required to report travel times from “downtown to the Allstate Arena,” which is close to O’Hare.
