Hours after last Thursday’s broadcast of The Apprentice that Shoptalk received an e-mail in which MPG Direct president and CEO Dick Wechsler rips Donny Deutsch for claiming, on the NBC reality show, that “no one reads direct mail.” In the e-mail, sent to the press by Hope Kaplan of PR shop Rubenstein, Wechsler calls Deutsch’s claim “a gross distortion of the facts.” He goes on to cite a study by the Direct Marketing Association that said 30 percent of revenues generated by media spending in all categories come from direct mail.
Time this Tuesday morning when Martha Stewart is due to appear at the U.S. courthouse on Pearl Street in lower Manhattan, as her trial begins. The folks at SaveMartha.com plan to “line the avenue with our homemade signs and Save Martha aprons and maybe even a few assorted kitchen implements, and we will send a message to the world that Martha Stewart has our support.”
Years since a furniture retailer in Canada called Ameublements Tanguay used part of a Frank Zappa song in two TV ads without permission. Zappa’s widow, Gail Zappa, claimed copyright infringement; a settlement was finally reached last week. It included a public apology. “This was not my first [victory],” Zappa said, “but maybe the most delicious one because of the apology.”
