FosterGrant Looks to Phillips Design Group

BOSTON Phillips Design Group has been hired for creative duties by eyeglass company FosterGrant, the agency said.

The Smithfield, R.I.-based client had most recently worked with various shops on a project basis. Its last retainer relationship was with Interpublic Group’s Mullen in Wenham, Mass., which fashioned ads for FosterGrant in 2002 and 2003.

Initial spending through independent Phillips Design will be about $500,000, with a budget increase expected next year, according to the agency.

The goal is to modernize and revitalize FosterGrant in order to expand its distribution and customer base.

A major trade launch is planned for the summer with a consumer-focused ad campaign planned for next year. The scope of work for Phillips Design includes print ads, direct marketing and collateral materials. Media buying will be handled in-house.

FosterGrant became an icon American brand some three decades ago via sassy magazine ads that featured pop-culture stars of the day and the still resonant slogan, “Who’s that behind those FosterGrants?” The brand’s profile and ad spending fizzled throughout the 1980s and ’90s.

Boston-based Phillips Design specializes in consumer products with an emphasis on fashion and financial clients.
