Google executive chairman Eric Schmidt has been named Media Person of the Year by the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity and will be honored June 22 in the Palais des Festivals.
Each year, the festival awards a prominent personality who is an influential figure in the development of the current media landscape. In selecting Schmidt, Cannes organizers cited his success in helping to grow Google from a Silicon Valley startup to a global technology giant.
“Under Eric’s leadership, Google has truly changed the way people around the world access information on a daily basis,” said Philip Thomas, Cannes lion CEO.
Schmidt, who has been with Google since 2001 and was chief executive until last month, will also be speaking at the company’s seminar on June 22 during the festival.
