Dreamworks Talking Spot Media

LOS ANGELES — The film studio DreamWorks SKG is contacting media agencies about a spot broadcast buying project, sources said.

One source, describing the conversations as “not formal and in the very early days,” said it appears most of DreamWorks? $150 million media business, handled by GSD&M, Austin, Texas, was not threatened.

Amy Gruberg, DreamWorks’ media chief, wants to learn whether the studio can make its local broadcast spending — estimated at $30-40 million last year — more efficient.

The Glendale, Calif., studio founded by Jeffrey Katzenberg, Steven Spielberg and David Geffen has two major releases slated for the pivotal summer season: “Shrek,” the animated film opening May 18 and starring Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz, and the sci-fi comedy “Evolution,” which hits theaters on June 8 and stars David Duchovny, Julianne Moore and Orlando Jones.

GSD&M referred calls to DreamWorks, where executives were unavailable for comment.
