Dreaming Of Ogilvy Pays Off

Ask Fabio Costa where he always wanted to work, and he’ll tell you Ogilvy.

Hence this Brazilian art director’s new job is a dream come true. He replaces Aaron Griffiths as creative director and senior partner at OgilvyOne’s San Francisco office.

“Their strong creative reputation precedes them; Ogilvy is often the benchmark of many creatives worldwide,” Costa said. “So, of course I wanted to be on the winning team. The decision to join was an easy one.”

Costa was hired from Canadian agency Blast Radius, which he joined following a tenure at Almap BBDO, Brazil. While at Almap, he was behind work that brought home awards such as Cannes Cyber Lions and golds from the London International Awards.

In his new position, Costa oversees a team of 27 creatives and reports to Arthur Ceria, executive creative director of the San Francisco office. He will work mainly on Yahoo!, the shop’s flagship client. “Fabio brings a wealth of creative firepower to our growing offering and is a great addition to our team,” Ceria wrote in a statement.

Costa is a single triathlete who enjoys traveling to unusual points on the map. “I go to weird places that nobody, at least nobody I know, has been,” he said. His next stop? Bratislava, Slovakia, which, coincidentally, is where the horror film Hostel was set.

Costa got his start in advertising after earning a master’s degree in fine arts in Brazil. Through connections, he got hired at Young & Rubicam, then later moved to Almap BBDO. After that, he took the job with Blast Radius, where he built Web sites for brands such as BMW and Nike, but found he missed advertising.

He said after two years in Toronto, besides thinking, “This place is really cold,” he realized, “Advertising is my passion and where my heart lies, and I have to follow it.

“I always aspired to work at Ogilvy, because they are in the business of building brands,” he said. “It’s not just a TV spot, an ad, but how to solve and accomplish the best for a brand.”
