John Holt has left Holt, Hughes & Stamell, the 36-person Portland, Maine agency he co-founded with George Hughes and Jon Stamell nearly nine years ago.

Holt has divested his one-third interest in the shop. Hughes and Stamell are now equal owners of the firm. The agency’s name will remain the same.

‘We wanted to go more in the direction of strategic consulting (and Holt did not),’ said Hughes, the shop’s chief financial officer. Holt has opened an office in South Portland; he does not have a noncompete agreement.

Stamell takes over for Holt as chief executive.
