Delta Queen Returns to Mayer

DALLAS Peter A. Mayer Advertising is once again the advertising agency of Delta Queen Steamboat Company.

The client said the creative and media account is worth $10 million.

The independent New Orleans shop won the business of the local steamboat company in 1986 and held it until 2001 under its previous owners, American Classic Voyages. Shortly after Delaware North Companies purchased the firm and brought it out of bankruptcy last year, Delta Queen hired GodwinGroup of Jackson, Miss., to handle ad chores temporarily.

Delta Queen president Rick Abramson launched a review three months ago that was ultimately narrowed to four shops: Peter A. Mayer; Godwin; Interpublic Group’s Mullen in Pittsburgh; and the team of Logan Marketing and WPP Group’s J. Walter Thompson, in New Orleans and Atlanta, respectively, Abramson said.

“It’s a substantial piece of business, so it certainly is positive in that regard,” said shop president Mark Mayer. “Second of all it’s in a category that we really do well in—tourism and hospitalityߞand it means we were able to bring back to New Orleans a substantial piece of business.”

Mayer plans to break a campaign in the fall.

Delta Queen offers overnight paddlewheel steamboat cruises that travel the Mississippi, Ohio, Tennessee and Illinois Rivers. Its three boats are the Delta Queen, Mississippi Queen and American Queen.
