DDB Wins Commercial Emmy

NEW YORK One of the standouts at the Super Bowl has won an Emmy as well. “Surprise Dinner,” an ad by DDB in Los Angeles for Ameriquest Mortgage, won the 2005 Creative Arts Emmy for outstanding commercial on Sunday.

The spot, directed by Craig Gillespie of MJZ, shows a man cooking dinner for his wife. After their cat knocks over some spaghetti sauce, the man picks up the pet by the scruff of its neck, holding a knife in the other hand. When his wife enters, she is greeted by the seemingly macabre scene. The tagline: “Don’t judge too quickly. We won’t.”

Other nominees included: “Applause,” by DDB in Chicago for Anheuser-Busch, showing people in an airport applauding returning soldiers; “The One Campaign,” by @radical.media in New York for the One Campaign, which depicts celebrities and average citizens asking people to help end global poverty; “Drink Up,” by BBDO in New York for Aquafina, which presents people feeling euphoric after drinking the water; and “Glen,” by the now-defunct New York office of Fallon for Starbucks Doubleshot drink, which presents the lead singer of Survivor singing “Eye of the Tiger,” with new lyrics, to an office worker.
