Davidandgoliath Gets Media Chief

Davidandgoliath’s methodical search for top staff has yielded a media director, Flettene Parks Neal, who joins the 9-month-old agency from TBWA\Chiat\Day.

Neal served as media director on Kinko’s and Samsonite at the Playa del Rey, Calif., agency. She will now run the media operations on the $190 million Kia Motors America account at davidandgoliath.

“Staffing an agency from scratch is a tough task, and while some shops just load up with people, we want to be selective,” said David Angelo, chief creative officer/managing partner, about the new hire. “We interviewed a lot of people, and in the end it’s all about chemistry. I can sit down in a room with Flettene and concept with her, hang out with her, laugh with her and come away with brilliant work.”

“So many of my colleagues were flocking to dot-com companies, but that wasn’t for me,” said Neal, whose background includes media posts at BBDO, J. Walter Thompson, Western International Media and William Esty. “I wanted to stay in the agency business and really help grow something from the ground up.”

One of her first tasks will be to staff up her department. Neal said she expects to hire about 12 new planners and strategists. Omnicom’s media arm, OMD, handles Kia’s media buying.

Neal’s hire follows the arrival earlier this summer of executive producer Amy Samuelson, formerly of Shelter Films, to run Spinach, the agency’s in-house production company. Angelo said the shop is close to filling its next top post, a director of strategic planning.
