ConocoPhillips Picks KSL

ConocoPhillips has awarded U.S. planning and buying duties to KSL Media after a review, sources said.

Sources identified the other finalists as independents Horizon Media in Los Angeles and Palisades Media in Santa Monica, Calif. The Encino, Calif., office of KSL, also an independent, is expected to handle the business.

KSL succeeds independent FMK in Houston on the account.

The client’s major media spending totaled $11 million in the first 11 months of 2009 and nearly $25 million for all of ’08, according to Nielsen. Those figures don’t include online spending.

Final presentations took place last week at the client’s headquarters in Houston, according to sources. Roth Associates in Playa del Rey, Calif., managed the process, which began in October.

Roth did not return calls and KSL and ConocoPhillips could not immediately be reached.

The media competition followed a creative review last year that resulted in the hiring of independent Venables Bell & Partners in San Francisco.
