Connors III May Head IPG Spinoff

John Connors III is being considered by the Interpublic Group of Cos. to head a business unit comprising its various Internet-related agency holdings.
The 32-year-old son of Hill, Holliday, Connors, Cosmopulos chairman and chief executive Jack Connors is one of two candidates under consideration to manage the unit that may be spun off and traded separately, a source said. The younger Connors has been key to building Hill, Holliday’s interactive business.
What is driving the plan is not a desire to create a second publicly traded entity, but “to build enough volume and resources to service clients in a meaningful way,” the source said.
Exactly which holdings might be combined, however, is the question that continues to slow progress on the plan [Adweek, May 24].
The subject is expected to come up this week in Madrid where the board of the McCann-Erickson WorldGroup will meet.
APL Digital is resisting, sources said. Not currently included on the list is Nicholson, New York, in which IPG holds a minority stake. A previous scenario involved both shops. The role of Icon Medialab International in Stockholm remains a question.
Some IPG executives have doubts that a spin-off would be viable. Sources said one advisor called the unit a “competitive disadvantage.”
