Collins to Depart Ogilvy for Design Post at Apple Team Will Take On His ECD, Brand Integration Group Duties

Brian Collins, senior partner and executive creative director at Ogilvy & Mather, and head of the agency’s Brand Inte gration Group, is leaving to join Apple Computers.

Stepping in to replace him will be a four-person team that Collins assembled during the past three years: Judd Harner, senior partner and managing director; Michael Ian Kaye and David Israel, both associate creative directors; and Rebeca Mendez, creative director.

The team will report to Rick Boyko, shop co-president and chief creative officer.

“The idea that they will all become equal partners in the Brand Integration Group was postured by Brian,” Boyko said. “The titles will likely change, but we haven’t gotten to that point. I was initially thinking of replacing Brian, but he came up with this arrangement and the team supported it.”

BIG, now in its fifth year, has offices in New York and Los Angeles and is Ogilvy’s design, packaging and in-store sign age unit.

Boyko started the unit and brought in Collins three years ago to broaden the unit’s scope in serving clients. “Just about all of our clients have been touched by the Brand Integration Group under Brian’s leadership,” Boyko said.

BIG is currently working on design projects for Miller, Hershey, Motorola and Sprite, among others.

Collins will become vice president of design at Apple. He joined Ogilvy from Foote Cone & Belding in San Francisco, where he was svp/creative director on Levi Strauss & Co., MTV, Janus funds and

Separately, Ogilvy is currently seeking a replacement for Joe McDo nagh, co-president and executive creative director of the shop’s West Coast office, who left in late April.

Boyko said the agency has made no decision on a replacement. Rick Roth, co-pres ident of Ogilvy’s Culver City, Calif., office, said the shop is more concerned with finding “a very high-caliber creative talent” than a co-president for the office.
