Cingular Marketing Chief Steps Down

ATLANTA — Virginia Vann, chief marketing officer for Cingular Wireless, has decided to leave the company to pursue other interests, according to an internal company memo.

Vann joined the Atlanta-based telecom in mid-2000 and was part of the review committee that selected Omnicom’s BBDO in the fall of the same year to launch its first campaign. The company had billings of about $400 million
in 2001.

“The creation and development of the Cingular brand is one of the most successful launches in modern marketing history,” said Mark Feidler, Cingular COO, in the memo. “But Virginia’s contribution went well beyond that. She was instrumental in the development of Cingular’s innovative new products including guiding the growth of our wireless data business, as well as helping forge the unique culture we have and the personality we’ve created.”

A search for a replacement for the position has begun. In the interim, all of Vann’s organization will report to Feidler.

Before joining Cingular, Vann served as vice president of strategic marketing for SBC Wireless, Inc. She also served as president of SBC Long Distance, and held other senior positions within the company as part of an SBC career that began in 1989.

“Virginia has had a tremendous, positive impact on Cingular. We thank her and wish her well in new endeavors,” said Feidler.
