LOS ANGELES-John Barnes has joined Carat’s office here as managing director, a new post. Barnes spent more than 13 years at Ammirati Puris Lintas, New York, where he most recently served as executive vice president and managing director, responsible for accounts such as Johnson
& Johnson, Nabisco, Labatt and JVC.
Since February, he has served as president of the marketing communications division of Chapel Hill, N.C.-based FGI.
Barnes, who grew up in Southern California, is returning to Los Angeles for personal and professional reasons. “Carat is committed to growing,” he said. “They have a great story to tell and a great point of difference.”
Barnes will report to Carat North America chief executive David Verklin in New York. Chairman and chief executive officer Andrew Butcher and president and chief operating officer Bruce Millner remain with the media buying company, but Barnes will be responsible for day-to-day operations in Los Angeles. Carat’s offices in San Francisco, Englewood, Colo. and Beaverton, Ore., will also report to Barnes.
Tom Butta president and chief executive officer of FGI, said of Barnes’ departure: “He just got an offer from Carat and it was a great offer. He has family on the West Coast … I think it was a better decision for him personally. … It came out of nowhere.” ƒ
