The Captain’s Bachelor Days

Grey Advertising’s “The Captain was here” campaign for Captain Morgan rum takes a rather risquƒ turn this month for Playboy’s 45th birthday.
A four-page “centerfold” (detail shown here) in the February issue shows Hugh Hefner’s famous pad. Copy reads: “A peek inside Playboy’s 45th Anniversary Bash.” The next page is a teaser showing only a pair of heavy double doors.
When tempted voyeurs open the doors, they see a quintessential Playboy scene, with Hefner surrounded by buxom beauties–some real, some cartoon images–all pulled from 45 years of Playboy.
Because “the Captain was here,” however, several of the women and Hugh have been defaced with the campaign’s red beards and mustaches.
Greg Meyers was the lucky creative supervisor on location at the Playboy mansion in Los Angeles. Naturally, visiting Playmates came and went as the work went on. Hef himself personally approved the ad, and Meyers says he was more than pleased.
“Captain Morgan, as a pirate and a guy, is always looking for the ultimate party,” said Meyers. –Sloane Lucas
