Accounts Veteran to Look Beyond Hyundai
LOS ANGELES–Bates USA West has turned to one of this market’s most recognized veteran rainmakers to help the shop expand beyond its flagship Hyundai account.
Chuck May, who has more than three decades of agency account management experience, has joined as director of business development.
May declined to comment on the appointment. Tim Hart, Bates USA West president and CEO, did not return phone calls. Sources confirmed, however, that May will shuttle between Bates’ Southern California headquarters in Irvine and its Beverly Hills service office.
May began his career in Detroit and moved west in 1974 to work on Honda at Needham Harper & Steers. His Southern California rƒsumƒ also includes stints at BBDO, DYR, Grey and Benton & Bowles. Most recently, he was a group account director at Saatchi & Saatchi Los Angeles.
Besides Honda, May has been account leader on some of the region’s most high-profile pieces of business, including Vons and Hughes supermarkets. His category experience also includes consumer electronics, restaurants and sporting equipment.
Bates’ Southern California operation has billings of about $275 million, most of that from Hyundai. The shop also handles youth-market clothing marketer PacSun, an estimated $5-10 million account. K
