Barry Silverstein Joins Arnold

Barry Silverstein, an agency executive with more than 30 years of experience, has joined Arnold’s direct-marketing operation as chief strategy officer, a new position.

Silverstein comes to Arnold after an extended run as chief executive officer of Directech/eMerge in Burlington, Mass., a relationship-marketing agency he founded in 1983. That entity is preparing to close due to the poor financial climate and an inability to collect payments from some clients, Silverstein said.

Silverstein and Directech president Peter Evans were principal owners. They do not plan a bankruptcy filing, Silverstein said. Evans could not be reached.

“I would like to bring more business-to-business clients to Arnold Direct—that’s my forte,” said Silverstein.

He will supervise five others in the department of roughly 35 staffers and will report to Karen Driscoll, who was recently named chief operations officer at the Boston-based shop.

Prior to his tenure at Directech, Silverstein served as creative services director at Epsi lon, a Burlington, Mass., marketing outfit.

Silverstein brings 12 of Directech’s 25 staffers to Arnold, a unit of Havas. Those employees will work at Arnold’s direct and interactive units in various capacities, Silverstein said. The re mainder of Directech’s staf fers were let go, he said.

Silverstein also brings Direc tech client Teradata, a database company owned by NCR.

Although Arnold’s direct unit services some of the shop’s existing clients, including Royal Carib bean and Volkswagen of America, the division also works for clients of its own. In recent years, it has handled chores for Staples, Bose, Media One and Jacksonville Electric Authority.

Silverstein has written several books, including Business-to-Business Internet Marketing and Internet Marketing for Information Technology. He also has written for trade publications and marketing Web sites.
