Art Department, MAMA Join Visual Forces

NEW YORK Photo and illustration resource Art Department and artists rep firm MAMA have partnered to form a one-stop shopping locale for ad agencies looking for commercial artists.

The companies, which have a combined staff of 30 employees, are located at Art Department’s space at 48 Greene St., New York, and will cross-reference each other’s talent bank when trying to place commercial artists in agency projects, said Carah von Funk, vice president and founder of MAMA. While MAMA personnel produce print, broadcast and digital design work, Art Department staffers focus more on illustration and photography, she said.

“Agencies have downsized their creative departments and need to access more creative talent outside their agency,” said von Funk. The alliance hopes to draw more clients by offering a broader variety of freelancers under one roof, she said.

Together, the companies serve a roster of agencies that include Wieden + Kennedy in Portland, Ore., and Ogilvy & Mather in New York and clients such as American Express, Victoria’s Secret and HBO.

While no monies exchanged hands in forming the partnership, the companies will pay a commission when the partner agency finds one of its artists work.
