Arnold Rules at 43rd Hatch Awards

BOSTON Arnold cemented its standing as the region’s premier creative agency at the 43rd annual Francis W. Hatch Awards.

The Havas-owned agency won best-of-show honors for a Volkswagen of America commercial and also took home seven of 10 gold prizes at the awards ceremony, which was held on Wednesday night at Avalon in Boston. Arnold’s seven gold prizes and 69 overall awards were by far the most for any agency. Hatch is presented by The Ad Club and honors creative excellence among New England agencies and clients.

Boston-based Arnold won top prize for a VW TV commercial called “Squares.” The spot contrasts mundane square items such as light sockets, doors, buildings and even bar codes with the sleek, curved design of the New Beetle.

The creative team on the “Squares” ad consisted of chief creative officer Ron Lawner, creative director Alan Pafenbach, art director Kevin Dailor, copywriter Tim Gillingham and producer Keith Dezen. Malcolm Venville of production company Anonymous directed.

Arnold scored six golds for VW and a single gold for its work supporting the American Legacy Foundation’s national anti-smoking program.

Wednesday’s showing also marked Arnold’s second consecutive best-of-show performance at Hatch.

Winning single golds were Digitas for the Jazz Musicians’ Emergency Fund, Clarke Goward for Bulmers America and the Barbarian Group for Release1.

Interpublic Group’s Hill, Holliday, Connors, Cosmopulos placed second to Arnold with 22 overall prizes, IPG’s Mullen took home 13 awards and Clarke Goward won nine. Connelly Partners/CGN won eight awards; Fort Franklin took home six.

The Hatch win capped a successful awards season for Arnold, which this summer won (with partner Crispin Porter + Bogusky) the sole Grand Award given to a U.S. agency at the New York Festivals international design and print advertising awards. The Arnold-Crispin team also shared the Grand Effie at the New York American Marketing Association’s 2003 Effie Awards. Both of those wins came for work done on behalf of American Legacy.
