Andy’s Team

While the Seattle SuperSonics struggled to advance past the first round of the National Basketball Association playoffs last week, its ad agency was celebrating a championship of its own.
Seattle creative agency WongDoody took home the Grandy, the top award at the 34th annual International Andy Awards in New York, for its season-long campaign supporting the SuperSonics’ NBA season.
The campaign aimed to shed the veneer of stardom and show the players as real people, said Ben Wiener, managing partner and head of the agency’s Santa Monica, Calif., office.
One spot features SuperSonics forward Sam Perkins visiting a family in their home. When things get a little rowdy and mom has to order the kids to bed, Perkins dutifully complies as well.
In addition to the Grandy, the agency won four other Andys for the Sonics campaign.
The $50,000 prize money that came with the Grandy will be donated to a Sonics charity, Wiener said.
