After WWL Walks, B/O Steps In for ‘Cats

ATLANTA The Charlotte Bobcats, the newest National Basketball Association franchise, has selected Boone/Oakley to produce advertising for the team’s inaugural season this year, the agency said.

The independent Charlotte, N.C., shop was given the account without a review. The agency participated in a review last year that included six other shops. Wray Ward Laseter, an independent Charlotte agency, won that review.

WWL said it resigned the advertising portion of the account after it failed to reach an agreement with the franchise on the terms of the contract. The shop will continue to produce advertising and provide public relations for the new Charlotte Arena, where the Bobcats will play, and Carolina Sports Entertainment Television, a new regional network that will air the games.

The NBA team declined to disclose its advertising budget, but sources estimated the account at about $1 million when it was awarded to WWL last year.

Boone/Oakley will produce TV, radio, print, outdoor and guerilla advertising for the team. The agency produced ads for the Charlotte Hornets, the city’s last NBA team, which moved to New Orleans two years ago.
