The market for jobs in advertising, media and marketing began in 2001 where it left off at the end of 2000: in the doldrums. That’s the sad tale told by the volume of help-wanted classifieds running in Adweek last month. If you didn’t jump to a fabulous new job during the booming first half of 2000, you may need to sit still for a while.

Those who prefer to see the help-wanted glass as half full rather than half empty will recall that January 2000 was quite a strong month, which means the numbers below are weak in comparative terms but less so when seen in historical perspective.
