The campaign season remains more than a year away, but ad agency types are already emerging in national and state campaigns.
North Woods Advertising, Minneapolis, which created spots that helped put ex-wrestler Jesse Ventura into the governor’s mansion in Minnesota, is talking to presidential candidate Rep. John Kasich, R-Ohio, said agency president William Hillsman.
The media team for the Republican presidential front-runner, Texas Gov. George W. Bush, met last week to discuss strategy for a likely White House bid, sources said. The team includes Mark McKinnon of Public Strategies in Austin, Texas; Stuart Stevens and Russ Schriefer of Alexandria, Va.-based Stevens Schriefer Group; and Lionel Sosa, Kathy Sosa and Luis Garcia of San Antonio’s Garcia LKS. The creative work will echo themes from Bush’s gubernatorial race: conservative and compassionate family values, responsibility and accountability.
Alex Kroll, chairman emeritus of Young & Rubicam Inc., is a likely player in former Sen. Bill Bradley’s bid for the Democratic nomination against Vice President Al Gore [Adweek, Dec. 7].
Another presidential hopeful, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., has hired media consultant Greg Stevens of Stevens, Reed & Curcio in Alexandria, to advise him. McCain has a history of paying attention to advertising issues, particularly regarding tobacco.
In New York, the closely watched race to replace retiring Democratic Sen. Daniel Moynihan may pit first lady Hillary Clinton against New York’s combative Republican mayor, Rudy Giuliani. Hizzoner would likely team up again with Tampa, Fla.-based Doner Public Affairs, sources said.
In 1997, Doner helped Giuliani win his mayoral re-election campaign. He has kept close ties with Doner, and officials have had meetings regarding what role Doner president Adam Goodman and senior political consultant Rick Wilson might play, sources said. Goodman and Wilson both attended a recent fund-raiser for Giuliani. The pair would probably move to New York, as they did in 1997, sources said. Doner declined comment, but a source said “Everybody on the GOP side would give their eye teeth to work with Rudy.”
Mrs. Clinton has been linked with consultants Mandy Grunwald, David Doak, Hank Morris and Bob Shrum.
The cost of a Clinton-Giuliani race might exceed $40 million for each side, said a source. A typical New York senate candidate spends $25-30 million. “You have to reorient yourself to the magnitude,” said the source. ¡
