The lineup for the annual Cannes gala in Chicago promised that judges from this year’s awards festival would discuss their choices.

But only two out of the four scheduled speakers showed up.

Cannes jury chairman Jeff Goodby of Goodby, Silverstein & Partners and film juror Lee Gar finkel of D’Arcy Masius Benton & Bowles (for now, anyway) did not attend, leaving Mike Hughes of The Martin Agency to run the event with help from George Gallate of Euro RSCG Interaction, who spoke about the cyber awards.

Hughes, who was on the press and poster jury, praised Chicago agencies for their winning entries at the annual festival. But he stopped himself before lavishing too much praise, admitting that he didn’t “like to say too many nice things about [DDB chief creative Bob] Scarpelli.”

Goodby, via a videotaped message, did encourage attendees to voice their reactions to the winning entries (à la the Cannes audience). Few in the typically reserved Midwestern crowd took him up on the offer, however, reacting politely but not too boisterously to the 90-minute presentation while awaiting a late dinner.
