2 Key Bay Area Reviews Near Decision Time

Final presentations are under way for two local agency reviews that quietly sparked the interest of Bay Area shops of all sizes. The San Francisco Chronicle and Kendall-Jackson winery are both expected to select agencies by the end of this month.
Grant, Scott & Hurley, San Francisco, a recent spin-off of crosstown agency Goodby, Silverstein & Partners, is in the running for both accounts. Other finalists for the Chronicle business are Butler, Shine & Stern, Sausalito, Calif.; Citron Haligman Bedecarrƒ and incumbent Wolfe/Doyle, both San Francisco. Red Ball Tiger and Zoo Advertising, both San Francisco, round out the Kendall-Jackson contenders.
“Final presentations will happen [this week] and next,” said Debra Hall, director of promotions for the Chronicle. “We plan to make a decision by the end of January.” Hall said responsibilities for the account will include TV, radio and print ads.
A long list of contenders initially turned out for the prized Chronicle account, which Wolfe/Doyle has handled for several years. Interested parties included Goodby, Young & Rubicam, Kirshenbaum Bond & Partners-West and Hoffman/ Lewis, all in San Francisco.
Sources said Chronicle executives had been “very interested in hiring Goodby.” But the agency dropped out of the review last month because the estimated $1 million account “wasn’t big enough to pursue,” sources said.
The estimated $3-5 million Kendall-Jackson account also attracted high-profile San Francisco agencies, including Hal Riney & Partners and Ketchum Advertising (soon to be a TBWA Chiat/Day office), said sources at those agencies. The Santa Rosa-based winery has no incumbent shop.
Ramona Cappello, Kendall-Jackson’s director of marketing, had said that no formal review was under way for the account. But sources said interest in the account was “tremendous” and a review “took shape quickly because so many agencies were prepared to pitch.”
