Jim Beam "Puppy"

Brand: Jim Beam Whiskey
Agency: EnergyBBDO
Review Date: October 23, 2009

Jameson gives us a namesake who fights a giant octopus in a new spot. A high-profile ad from Johnnie Walker's offers a celebrated actor who eloquently recounts the brand's history. And now bellying up to the bar: Jim Beam, which presents a "rent-a-puppy" scam to help guys pick up chicks. The spot opens in a park, where two women enjoy an afternoon picnic that's quickly interrupted by an adorable pup. The dog's male owner, or so it initially seems, rushes over to apologize. The girls pick up the puppy, gushing in that tone of voice you only hear when people talk to pets or babies. Two more dudes use the same trick. One sits poolside with a pug pup propped on a boat-shaped float ("He's my first mate"), and the other reclines outside a bar, the only guy actually shown with a glass in his hand. Ultimately, the commercial -- perhaps inspired by themes more often found in beer advertising -- reveals the predictable punch line: a bunch of guys waiting in queue with cash in hand for their pick-up "props." --Eleftheria Parpis

Didn't this agency just lose the account?

Sometimes spots like this turn out great. Sometimes they fail miserably. This one is really stinky.

Jim Beam doesn't have a brand. This looks a fine way to build a new one. It made me (a beer guy) laugh and think about Jim Beam 30 seconds longer than I ever did before.

Unfortunately this is just off brand. It has nothing to do with Jim Beam and that is probably why the client fired the agency. They should fire the team associated with this as well.

This is a great ad for the category. It uses humor effectively to connect with the target. The spot says: We know who you are and what you're all about. Does the spot differentiate the product from the competition, or other spirits? Not at all. But it does make a connection and elicits a positive brand feeling that will promote brand preference. People like to be associated with "cool" brands, and "cool" ads help create the mystique of cool. This is classic booze marketing. Run it often enough and everyone will be saying, "Have you seen that Jim Beam spot? It's awesome."

If you've never seen an ad about what guys do or with guys using puppies to pull chicks. You've lifted two hackneyed concepts for one ad. Impressive.

Nice ad.I will give it a 3 rateing. The use of the puppy might be a little trite but in our comteperary lives it is true. dogs do start converations. the social comentary is what I belive ads are. Bum on the street is well portrayed and the Jim Beam is a understated but attaches itself to averiity of scial groups or human demigraghics. please excuse any mispellings in the comment.

I was going to give this 3 stars but the guy who posted the same 1 star review 15 times is just too insecure to ignore. Someone got fired by the client or the agency, huh? This could be any beer ad. There is no sense of the brand, what it means, or where it comes from. But its shot well, nice lines.
