Diet Dr Pepper "Unbelievale"

Brand: Diet Dr Pepper Soft Drink
Agency: Deutsch, Inc.
Review Date: September 23, 2009

There's a support group for everything these days, so why not one for all those characters that are suffering from "I don't exist" syndrome? This animated Diet Dr Pepper spot from Deutsch/LA is set in the middle of one such gathering, where Santa Claus is griping about busting his hump crawling down chimneys to deliver presents every year. A Diet Dr Pepper rep pipes in sympathetically, "People still don't  believe." Santa, the Easter Bunny (here looking kind of drunk), an alien and Big Foot laugh at the soda guy's goal of convincing folks that a diet soda can be satisfying. "Good luck with that one, bud," Santa quips. Presented in the stop-motion style of classic holiday specials, the spot has a certain stop-the-fast-forwarding appeal, but once you do you find yourself in overly familiar territory. Although you don't often see a Santa with a bit of bite, too many brands have hitched their "unbelievable" product or deal to fabled creatures like unicorns and leprechauns -- and even more have relied on the goodwill drawn from memories of those childhood favorites by replicating the Rankin/Bass style. I appreciated the one character that doesn't say a thing the most: the purple alien, who looks at the Dr Pepper guy like he's the one from another planet. --Eleftheria Parpis

This was stop motion, not claymation. Bent Image Lab & Deutesch are running out of ideas visually. The script was poop.

Wow. What? Did you all get fired from Deutsch?! Lotta nasty digs at the agency. Ummm...Hello. The fact that you're writing about this very funny spot, means you remembered it! That means it did the job well. That's what advertising is all about, right? And if it's moving product, that's the next bonus. There's more to come so stay tuned.

I wish this were really funny, but it's not. Its difficult to follow as there is way too much "sell" going on. It's really well executed, but the dialog completely sucks, so it fails miserably.

Well... you all sound very upset about a really funny spot that is a refreshing departure from all the Diet soda advertising to date. I liked it. I laughed. The product looked good. I remember the brand - what more do you need? Sorry to break it to you all, time to live in the now, you can claim any premise for a spot has "been floating around" - they all have been - its just about who can execute it in the most clever, unique and memorable style. Seems to me, they nailed it. Good job, Deutsch.

This script has been floating around that place for sometime now. Great job on getting it done.

Answer: Their EVP of Broadcast Production skedaddled a few months ago .... big hole at the agency.

Great production, but the spot is all over the place and lacks a simple premise. It seems like Deutsch can no longer execute a simple commercial. What happened there?

I also, don't know where to begin. So horrible for so many reasons. I exist support group - confusing and stupidly on the nose at the same time. If I see another support group/intervention campaign (comcast, Bahamas, Dierct TV, cartoon network, ect ect) i will literally puke. Oh, I get it, the pretend characters as claymation makes it different and good? No. it doesn't. Not to mention that the spot, just by the fact that it's claymation takes you to the holidays - which this is not. More bad work from a bad agency. How do they keep clients?

Didn't Deutsch just do a support group spot for DirecTV? Talk about recycling!
