Monster.com "Crime Scene"

Brand: Monster.Com
Agency: BBDO Worldwide
Review Date: September 21, 2009

Good thing the CSI team doesn't have a "take your friend to work day." A new Monster.com spot from BBDO New York shows what might happen if an investigative team had one such friend tag-along to a crime scene. The detectives go over the stats at a crime scene, as the hapless friend in shorts repeats their observations. Eager to participate, he proudly exclaims, "Found the weapon," and muddies the evidence, a gun, with his own fingerprints. Then drops it. "Until there's 'take your friend to work day,'" explains the voiceover, "there's career mapping," a new tool offered by the job site that details career paths. A second commercial features a doctor's exam scenario. In that one, the visitor prepares for the exam by putting on a rubber glove and is disappointed to learn he won't be helping. The spots do a good job showing what the alternative to career mapping could be. But as mildly amusing as they are, the "take your friend to work day" theme could have been taken to funnier extremes. --Eleftheria Parpis

Maybe BBDO should have a 'bring your friend to work day' and the copywriters could bring their friend. The one that can write. Monster has officially jumped the shark.

The Doctor execution is much better. They should have posted that one instead. But it's clear BBDO is missing something these days.

The Career Path Finder sounds like an interesting tool but I have no idea what it is based on the spot. The creative missed the boat by not explaining the device and instead going to execution.

If I brought a friend to work I would be severely disciplined and would most likely lose my job.

Bringing someone to work has nothing to do with finding a career path. These designated days exist: A.) because the office creates a day to show your family what you do. B.) to speak/show and tell . Shoehorning a make believe idea that this might lead to a possible career is confusing and just plain off.

So the buffoonish "friend" is supposed to represent a typical prospective Monster.com user? Is that what they think of their customers? And WTF is this careerpath nonsense... people want jobs. EPIC STRATEGIC FAIL.

Well the spots dumb and if all these people don't get it, it's because the creatives who did this are dumb.

  • 10. Are you dumb? comments:

Seriously? It's pretty simple guys... You can find out about other jobs through career mapping. Or you can find out the hard way. I thought it was funny. Better than 90 percent of the crap out there. It's not a bad spot. And it's not that unclear. I think a lot of you have agendas.

Parpis misses the strategic buffoonery here once again. This spot makes zero sense.

You see, the friend is exploring a new career path by tagging along with his cop buddy on "take a friend to work day" which doesn't exist, so you should use monster's career mapping. "There's a better way to explore new careers" Brilliant job, guys. Brilliant.

No Eric Silver, no great monster.com spots. This is terrible. And look at the Fedex spots. Awful. Not funny! Poor comedic direction. BBDO lost something....What a major loss for BBDO. Lubars you need to hire some funny people if you want to do funny spots...digital people are not funny!

  • 26. not bad comments:

It's not even close to their Superbowl ads, but I thought it was pretty good.

  • 27. Missing the Message comments:
    September 22, 2009

From reading the comments I'm surprised that quite a few respondents missed the message. I thought it was pretty clear that the message is that Monster Career Mapping is the smart way to find your way. The best thing is that it came across in a silly yet memorable manner.
