Olympus "Blendtec"

Brand: Olympus Cameras & Accessories
Agency: Mullen
Review Date: June 24, 2009

Social media's probably a good way to market cameras, since the devices themselves provide the means to share images and, by extension, personal experiences with others. So it makes sense for Mullen to cast a wide net as it introduces the multifunction Olympus E-P1. Facebook, Twitter and YouTube are in the picture (MySpace just can't catch a break), with Blendtec viral videos anchoring the appeal. Tom from Blendtec (he's like a crazy uncle you could probably outrun) stuffs various high-tech audio-visual gadgets into his blender and out pops the E-P1, which apparently blends the functions of those other devices. It's a fine approach fairly well executed -- though zooming in a bit on the punchline (say, in half the time?) might've helped. But what do I know? The last time I bought a camera, James Garner and Mariette Hartley were in the ads. --David Gianatasio

I tuned out pretty much this whole commercial... the guy is more exciting than the product.

I am a huge fan of "will it blend." I burn with jealousy that someone got to use this guy for something. I was sort of expecting that the camera being blended would be one of those bulletproof shockproof freezeproof olympuses, and that the resolution would be the thing emerging from the incredibly powerful Blendtec blender in one piece, with the tag something like "the Olympus Supertoughwhateverit is. No, it won't blend" . Interesting that they went this way. Still, I watched the entire 2:16 of it.

Hundreds of thousands of hits on youtube. Seems pretty viral to me. Embracing new school thinking and internet celeb--nice.

The ad suffers as a wooden parody of blendtec itself. The over over acting backfires. It is too long for any format other then internet, yet it has little viral potential. Given its sparse content it could be made into a 30 or 60 second spot. Prediction: No Sale
