Welch's "Alton Brown"

Brand: Welch's Fruit Juices
Agency: The VIA Group
Review Date: November 19, 2008

What's a chalkboard doing out in the vineyards in this spot (by The Via Group) for Welch's Grape Juice? Helping to illustrate a mini-lecture by Alton Brown, who some viewers will recognize as a food scientist/celebrity chef/TV personality/author/etc. (Among other things, he's host of a Food Network show called Good Eats.) Apparently he's known for his chalkboard-assisted disquisitions on the science of food, and this makes him a highly suitable spokesperson for Welch's as the brand positions its product as an aid to health. Brown is wearing a white apron, but a viewer could easily mistake it for a lab coat as he chatters away about polyphenols and antioxidants and free radicals. Actually, Brown's vocabulary in the spot is technical enough to suggest that Welch's has serious science on its side, but not so technical as to make viewers wonder whether the spot is trying to put one over on them. And, after all the talk of health, the commercial prudently has Brown say of the juice, "Of course, if you like it just for the taste, that's OK, too." This matter-of-fact statement is smart in the way it takes for granted that we all think grape juice is delicious. Consumers often suspect that conspicuously healthy foods can't taste very good. Addressing that notion directly would be as likely to reinforce it as to rebut it. Brown's remark has the virtue of keeping the viewer from forming this suspicion in the first place, where Welch's is concerned. By the way, red wine has polyphenols, too (for much the same reason that grape juice does). Will a vintner have the nerve to promote its product as a boon to your heart, mind and immune system the way this Welch's spot does? I'll drink a toast to the first one who does.  --Mark Dolliver

Its an ad for grape juice, why such venom? It made me want a glass.

You're either bitter because you lost the "Welches" account (maybe it's because you couldn't even spell your client's name)or because you were laid off with the thousands of other subpar talent recently. Either way, your sour grapes are no Welch's grapes!

The Director used to be a real talent. It's a shame to see him doing crap like this. Is MJZ still a solid company? Apparently not.

VIA must be a Direct Marketing Agency.

Welchs is the same as any other grape juice. The other comments are correct. This is a category campaign.

  • 10. Welches comments:

Will most likely drop VIA after this poor strategic direction. As Doliver says, it's a category claim not a product claim.

  • 11. Dudes? comments:

AG says, "It will sell juice to 30 year old dudes though." No it won't. It's clearly not targeting to them. What is wrong with these moronic VIA people? Dude.

  • 13. Dear Via Account Guy comments:

You are a hack. This campaign is bad and will hurt the brand. You should not insult people you don't know or agencies that are better than yours in every conceivable way either. The Effies are awards too and you will never win one for this lame TV campaign. Via can't even think 360. You're a dolt.

Welches ads through the years have all obviously been victim to testing, no doubt including this one (which I disagree with). Their marketing managers are trying to build Welches as a wholesome brand, and their past target have always been mothers with kids. They are not going to devalue their brand by doing an alex bogusky/gerry graff style ad (which will get a pencil, no doubt) to boost short term sales of juice to 30 year old dudes. This ad is good. No, it wont win anything. It will sell juice to 30 year old dudes though, and the people who made it will be happy they still have a job. To the piece of shit creatives who rag on peoples work...think before you speak. Then maybe your account people will fight for you so you don't have to ads like this .

Using a foodie is nothing new or relevant to this brand.

  • 17. AJL comments:

This is a great ad, but apparently most of you don't watch Good Eats. However, it's consistent with his television style and will be quickly recognized by all Food Network fans. Alton Brown's show is basically FOOD 101 and makes you realize all these things you should have already known about the food you eat.

This is not a creative campaign and unknown agencies like this shouldn't try to promote themselves with it.

  • 22. total BS is RIGHT! comments:

This spot is a turd and clearly someone from VIA (whoever they are) is trying to give this a positive spin. It's a piece of package goods shit. This will never help the brand or win you an award.

  • 30. total BS comments:

the commentary here is just so phony! its as though someone is reading the "desired perception" section of the creative brief and responding thusly. "I always thought of it as a little kids juice. Now I'm thinking i should be drinking more." Seriously??? It's clear that only an employee of the agency that produced this turd would talk this way. How utterly disingenuous.
