Reese's "Global Warming"

Brand: Reese's Peanut Butter Cups
Agency: Arnold Worldwide
Review Date: April 30, 2008

Global warming isn't funny, but I just couldn't help but laugh out loud at this new 15-second Reese's spot from Arnold that, um, puts the crises in proper perspective. "Stop global warming now," reads onscreen yellow type, in large capital letters against an orange background, as ominous music builds. "Or," the warning continues as a round shape begins to fade in and the punch line is delivered, "all the Reese's will melt." A graphic treatment gives the scene a hazy wiggle that emulates rising heat as a bite is chomped out of the chocolate peanut butter cup and the logo appears with the name of the new campaign, "Perfect." Other spots poke fun at sharing, "stupid, but nice," the origins of the candy, "chocolate and peanut butter walk in a bar," and the act of unwrapping the candy, "they look even better undressed." The ads, which feel like animated print executions, are mouth-wateringly simple and whimsically give the product personality and make it the star. --Eleftheria Parpis

Do you feel anxious when you see a television set left on standby? Does the sight of a plastic bottle haphazardly tossed into a paper-only recycling bin make you feel nauseous? Are you consumed with rage when someone has left an empty room and not switched off the light? Have you recently found yourself overcome with a desire to spit on your car-driving friends and family? When a loved one tells you that he is flying off for some winter sun, do you feel like bludgeoning him over the head with a blunt instrument until he appears no longer to be breathing? If so, don't worry! You are probably suffering from "carborexia", Or "energy anorexia". Psychiatrists in America have identified a new mental illness that threatens the very fabric of society: an obsession with saving the planet. Some people are so addicted to cutting their carbon emissions that they seem to have gone quite mad. Laugh at hose crazy warmists. They get mad. They don't even imagine how ridiculous they are!

"Over a billion people go hungry each day. I bet they wish they could have a Reese's!" Yeah, and what about the hundreds of thousands, perhaps even into the millions by now, who go hungry or are starving due to the 50% increase in the price of food caused by using corn for fuel instead of food. Global warming alarmism has real costs. Human lives are being lost now, not 20 or 50 years in the future.

This ad is pretty good really - it's (somewhat) topical, simple and maybe even confrontational without being offensive; what's not to like? Also it's part of the growing trend (although Reese's might "deny" it) that Global Warming, as caused by humans, is not a problem. If CO2 is such a problem, then why are global temperatures probably declining, or at least flat for 10 years and CO2 is skyrocketing? How are they connected? Irreverance is good, especially in the face of hokum.

When do you we see controversy that challenges the right? Why not a commercial with a woman who just had an abortion and reaches for a Pepsi? "Refreshing. Relieving. Liberating...Like a Clean Abortion."

According to 99% of the world's scientists we have got to decrease our CO2 emissions by 50% within the next 10 years. You get a Republican/ignorant ad agency putting forth one sentence of bullsh$t and all the other ignoramuses laugh. Yes it is funny that you live in a petroleum-based economy and doubt that CO2 has anything to do with global warming. I'm laughing at your stupidity. It is truly amazing that all of you anti-intellectuals haven't won some sort of Darwin award by snuffing yourselves by now.

That's the best argument I've seen yet for proponents of this utterly stupid lie called "global warming" (or is it "gorebull warming?). In a few years when we are firmly entrenched in the inevitable cooling cycle we now seem to be entering maybe they'll run an ad that says: Stop Global Cooling now or all the Reese's will freeze!

This commercial was cute, but the very first thing I thought about after seeing this commercial was the controversy it might caused with global warming believers. Apparently, it has not caused much! I am not complaining, but I thought this commercial was kind of risky.

This ad being a non dope smoker was thought up just after smoking and before ordering the pizza. Great idea but no legs to it. A big but though.. The target audience is high school, so simple knowledgeable things make the stoner teen feel smart. to add to my but.. Who doesn't hate when you put a chocolate bar in your pocket and it melts. So hurry eat it!

"This advertising is Fresh?" A product shot with an irreverent headline is fresh? A version of this campaign has graced the pages of every student advertising porfolio for decades now. Food with 'tude is what I call it. Yawn.

10 years ago Chiat ran those ABC billboards with yellow backgrounds. The general rule was not to do outdoor in yellow because it doesn't print well. Which also meant that nobody was doing outdoor in yellow. So the stuff stood out and looked gorgeous. Same brilliant rule-breaking here. Don't run an ad that's just a print ad executed in film. Which means nobody else is and they stand out brilliantly in the pods. Great work.

With record snow and cold temperatures across much of the US this year it's getting tougher and tougher to sell Global Warming to anyone. Pass me a Reese's and a hand warmer please.

Well I couldn't disagree more! Global warming is hilarious. Actually, if it were really happening the way the alarmists were claiming it wouldn't be funny. But I think it is a hoot that everyone thinks Algore is so seriously intelligent and prophetic. (Maybe he is profit-ic, because he will make millions on books and speaking engagements to hawk his snake oil.) Three cheers for the makers of Reeses. They will get my dollars.

I agree that global warming isn't funny, particularly when there's a persistent campaign by certain interests to convince people that global warming is a hoax. A stupid ad for a candy bar doesn't help. Might as well have an ad that intones, "Over a billion people go hungry each day. I bet they wish they could have a Reese's!" Because that would be hilarious, too.
