CLIO's Clique

Sin City hosts the awards for the advertising world's best and brightest

May 17, 2009

- Becky Ebenkamp, Brandweek

Mad men, mavericks and Manilows (well, just one of those) were on hand to celebrate in Las Vegas May 12-14 with the international advertising industry at the 50th anniversary of the CLIO Awards.

Honorary CLIOs were given to billionaire entrepreneur Mark Cuban, singer/songwriter Barry Manilow and Matthew Weiner, creator/executive producer of the AMC series Mad Men, which is set in Madison Avenue's golden age of the 1960s. Dan Wieden, co-founder and CEO of Wieden + Kennedy, was also given a Lifetime Acheivement Award. The CLIOs honor excellence in advertising, design and interactive worldwide. This is the first year the event has been held in Las Vegas.

Other highlights of the show included keynotes by Young & Rubicam, New York, global chief creative officer Tony Granger, who pronounced the ad agency model "dead" on Tuesday morning. Nick Law, evp/chief creative officer, North America for R/GA, gave a more unifying speech, "Divided We Fail," which bridged the cultural gap that can exist between agencies' traditional advertising and interactive talent.

Missed the party? No worries. Here's a list of the Grand winners, plus some of the more memorable moments from the acres of plush carpeting.

The CLIOs are produced by Nielsen Business Media, as is Adweek.
