On the Spot: Dan Wieden

Legendary adman opens up on creativity, his management style and more

May 27, 2009

- Eleftheria Parpis

NEW YORK "It's the most electric time. It feels like the old days again to me."

So says Wieden + Kennedy co-founder and CEO Dan Wieden in this exclusive video interview with Adweek creative editor Eleftheria Parpis.

Wieden spoke on the occasion of being honored this month with a Lifetime Achievement prize at the 50th anniversary CLIO Awards in Las Vegas.

The 64-year-old ad legend said the present landscape reminds him of the early '80s, when he launched his agency, because no one knows where the industry is going, which creates creative challenges and gives the nimble-minded opportunities to shine.

Of course, he also looks back on the shop's launch, discusses his long-standing relationship with calling-card client Nike and whips up this simple recipe for managerial success:
"Encourage people to be totally and fully themselves and yet work with other people who are on the same quest."
