Drama Comes To Online Video

One obstacle remains: attracting audiences and advertisers

July 28, 2008

NEW YORK To date, comedy has been the dominant art form in the short history of online video, spawning YouTube stars and sites ranging from Comedy.com to Crackle. More recently, Hollywood talent and a handful of user-producers have worked to launch more dramatic fare.

Among the most ambitious projects: "Foreign Body," an adult-targeted soap produced by Vuguru. Such shows face numerous obstacles, however, including a risk-averse attitude among some advertisers. Vuguru cd Steve Cohen said the series has generated close to 1 million views to date. "We're trying to create a viewing habit," he said.

"The biggest challenge is sponsorships," said Barry Jossen, gm, Stage 9, a subsidiary of Disney-ABC TV. It's a lot easier for buyers to run online ads in established shows than untested series, particularly when "the conventional wisdom in new media comedy is what works," he said. --Mike Shields, Mediaweek
