Committee OKs Obama's IP Nominee

Full Senate must now vote on Espinel's appointment

Nov 19, 2009

- Georg Szalai

A Senate committee on Thursday confirmed the nomination of Victoria Espinel, President Obama's nominee for the top intellectual property enforcer. Espinel must now be confirmed by the full Senate.

She would be the government's first IP enforcement coordinator.

Congress created that new position in response to requests from filmmakers, music labels and other content providers to strengthen the fight against copyright theft and trademark infringement. One key task for the new IP guru will be to coordinate policies across the various federal agencies that have a hand in IP issues.

"The Copyright Alliance extends its thanks to the Senate Judiciary Committee for today's positive action on the nomination of Victoria Espinel," said Copyright Alliance executive director Patrick Ross. "This is an encouraging step forward in a process that we are confident will lead to even better performance at the federal level of intellectual property rights enforcement."
