Hulu Launches Doc, Short Film Section

March 19, 2009

- Mike Shields, Mediaweek

NEW YORK Hulu is expanding its movie library with the launch of a new section dedicated to documentaries and short films.

The professional video repository -- the successful product of a joint venture between NBC Universal and News Corp. -- has built its audience primarily on the back of TV content, such as full-length episodes of shows like Family Guy and 30 Rock. But it also offers full-length movies from studios such as Universal and Paramount.

Starting today, the site now also houses over 100 films within the channel Hulu.com/documentaries, including prominent documentaries like Hoop Dreams, The Times of Harvey Milk and Speed and Angels. To promote the new channel, Hulu has tapped Morgan Spurlock (Super Size Me) to post comments on documentary filmmaking within a special thread on the site’s discussion boards. Hulu executives said the site plans to present similar question and answer sessions with film professionals down the road.

According to the latest comScore data, Hulu.com reaches over 25 million unique users per month.
