BMW plans to hire a consultancy to guide its media review.

LOS ANGELES BMW will review media chores on its $155 million ad account, the automaker confirmed today.

Omnicom Group's GSD&M Idea City in Austin, Texas, will defend. That agency also handles national creative duties, which are not currently in play. GSD&M added the BMW account in November 2005 following a review.

BMW said it would soon hire a search consultancy to run the media review.

Earlier this year, the client's U.S. regional advertising assignment, worth about $80 million, was put in play with an eye toward consolidating the work at a single shop. Publicis in Dallas and New York, pitching separately, and Grey in San Francisco are contending in that contest.

The Woodcliff Lake, N.J.-based client spent $155 million on ads in 2007, per Nielsen Monitor-Plus. Spending through the first half of '08 was $70 million.

BMW sales were down 7 percent to 181,000 units year-to-day through August, per Car Concepts.
