2 Remain in VW Pitch

Goodby, Deutsch/LA race to finish line

Oct 21, 2009

NEW YORK Volkswagen of America has narrowed the field in its $220 million creative review, a day after final presentations concluded, the client has confirmed.

Still in the running are Interpublic Group's Deutsch/LA in Marina del Rey, Calif., and Omnicom Group's Goodby, Silverstein & Partners in San Francisco. Two other contenders, Omnicom's DDB in New York and independent Wieden + Kennedy in Portland, Ore., have been eliminated.

A client representative said a final decision is expected before the end of the week.

Final presentations took place Monday and Tuesday at the client's headquarters in Herndon, Va., said sources. Each agency got about three hours to present to about nine client executives. Roth Associates in New York is managing the process.

The agencies either declined to comment or could not be reached.

The incumbent, MDC Partners' Crispin Porter + Bogusky in Miami, did not defend.

Media duties are not in play and remain at WPP Group's MediaCom in New York. VW's major media spending exceeded $200 million last year and totaled nearly $125 million in the first eight months of 2009, according to Nielsen. Those figures don't include online spending.
