Anatomy of Golfers' 'Buddies Trips'

Nov 20, 2008

-By Mark Dolliver

NEW YORK Apparently men don't think about sex all the time. A poll by Golf Digest, released in its December issue, suggests some of them spend a fair amount of time daydreaming about golf.

The polling was conducted in September among readers who've organized a "buddies trip," in which they and their golfing pals travel someplace for an outing centered on golf. Thirty-one percent said such a trip typically lasts five or more days, and another 40 percent said it lasts four days. A majority of respondents (59 percent) said the per-person cost of such a jaunt falls between $500 and $1,500, not counting airfare.

Florida is the favorite winter venue for these buddies trips; Myrtle Beach is the favorite non-winter destination. But if money were no object, Scotland or Ireland would be the dream destination.

As you might guess, drinking is on the agenda during many of these outings. When asked to say how many drinks per day each participant consumes, 12 percent of respondents said it averages just two drinks or fewer. But 46 percent put the drinks-per-day average at three to six, and 27 percent said it's seven or more. Then there were the 15 percent who opted for the answer "no idea -- it's all a fog."

The poll also asked respondents to say how often they daydream about their next buddies trip. Seventeen percent said they do so more than once a day, and another 48 percent say they daydream about it once a week or more.
