Women’s Groups Protest Tebow Super Bowl Ad

Women’s groups including the National Organization for Women and the Feminist Majority are up in arms about CBS’ decision to run an ad during the Super Bowl that stars former Florida Gators QB/#1 Jesus fan Tim Tebow and his mom.

The 30-second spot, paid for by Christian group Focus on the Family, will reportedly convey an anti-abortion message. According to the Washington Post, the ad is expected to carry theme of “Celebrate Family, Celebrate Life” and tell the tale of how Tebow’s missionary mom Pam ignored doctors’ orders to terminate her pregnancy after getting sick during a trip to the Philippines in 1987. She eventually gave birth to her son, who ended up winning the Heisman, led the Gators to two BCS titles and has jokingly earned messiah status on Deadspin.com.

But Jehmu Greene, president of the New York-based Women’s Media Center, tells WP: “An ad that uses sports to divide rather than to unite has no place in the biggest national sports event of the year – an event designed to bring Americans together.”

As of now, though, CBS doesn’t seem to be budging on the ad, which is already creating plenty of online buzz.
