When Crowdsourcing Goes Wrong: Shell Version

By Kiran Aditham

Good lord, what hath Shell wrought? Recently, the oil giant was given access by the Obama administration to drill “the vast snowy wastes of the North” and to help promote this endeavor, it launched a campaign called “Let’s Go! Arctic.” The goal behind the campaign–and these are Shell’s words–is to get “everyone to feel as ‘pumped’ as we do about freeing much-needed Arctic resources.” To do just that, Shell decided to set up a “social ad gallery” to let users create their own ads with an ad generator and the end results have had us chuckling all morning while reminding us of that Dudley Moore movie, Crazy People. If this isn’t an argument for crowdsourcing, we don’t know what is. Check out the full “gallery” here.
