Wexley School for Girls Provides ‘An Excellent Reason to Use dopl’

By Erik Oster

Well, here’s an odd one. Wexley School for Girls launched a new spot for Yelp competitor dopl, a bar/dining review app which bills itself as “tailored to the individual utilizing our custom, patent-pending doplrithm.

The spot opens with a cat-headed person approaching a club called Spay Lounge. After checking its phone for reviews and finding a five star review, the cat heads in. The bizarre scene unfolding inside is straight out of feline nightmares, leading in to the lines “Don’t get screwed” and “Use a better review app.” Well, that’s one way to deliver the message.

“We came to Wexley because we knew they were the type of agency that would get dopl’s unique culture and philosophy,” dopl founder and CEO Dennis Duckworth explained to Adweek. “Initially, we were looking for something that had a guerrilla or stunt aspect to it. While we weren’t totally sure what was doable within our scrappy startup budget, we were confident that Wexley would come up with something memorable and unique.”

“Dennis came to us with an amazing app and the wide open assignment of ‘Do whatever you want,'”added Wexley School for Girls co-founder and executive creative director Ian Cohen. “”The budget was small, so the creative had to feel big and make noise. This kind of assignment doesn’t come along often, and we spent quite a bit of time thinking about how to do something ridiculous enough to be shared but make it tangible to the app, which is all about making sure you don’t end up at the wrong place.”
