twofifteenmccann and Celebrities Say ‘Hello From Hulu’

By Erik Oster

Following its introduction of ad-free Hulu last month, twofifteenmccann launched “Hello From Hulu,” a goofy spot full of celebrity cameos.

Running as a 60-second broadcast ad and slightly longer online spot, the ad balances its quirky, tongue-in-cheek humor with plenty of the brand’s selling points: namely the shows and movies it has that a certain other streaming service doesn’t. An exuberant pitchman takes viewers through the “fake hallways” of Hulu, after saying “That is a great idea, J.J. Abrams and Stephen King, I can’t wait to see your new Hulu original,” while exiting the elevator. He informs viewers that they can watch all 19 seasons of South Park with the service, before passing through hallways with posters for other Hulu selling points like Seinfeld and Empire. Despite cameos from the likes of Mindy KalingAndy Samberg, Neil Patrick Harris and Taraji P. Henson the humor never really finds it mark and the schtick really wears thin by its conclusion. Still, twofifteenmccann hit all of Hulu’s major selling points, making sure to point out its new ad-free offering, and the celebrity cameos help make the effort a bit more memorable, so it could still work to attract new subscribers. The spot also introduces a new tagline for the brand, “Come TV with us.”
