During the 2008 presidential election, one website asked voters to cast their ballots using their recently chewed gum. The Gum Election placed posters around the world which displayed each of the candidates’ faces, requesting that passerby stick gum on either John McCain or President Obama in a public vote of “who sucks the most?”
Now, over two years later, the Gum Election is back, pitting AT&T against the newly iPhone-capable Verizon Wireless for a new public poster ballot of suckiness. Billing itself as a practice in “Modern Democracy in New York,” the new battle for mobile service sovereignty has “ballots” pasted all over NYC, with the above photo taken at the corner of Spring and Lafayette in Manhattan’s Lower East Side. The brains behind the outdoor campaign wishes to remain anonymous, but requests that New Yorkers exercise their democratic rights when looking for a place to throw out their old gum.
