TBWA\Paris Campaign Compares the Struggles of LGBT Kids to an Obstacle Course

By Patrick Coffee

LGBT groups have obviously made significant progress in the U.S. and beyond in recent years. Only yesterday, Georgia’s Republican governor Nathan Deal vetoed a “religious freedom” bill that would have allowed certain organizations to refuse to serve, hire or otherwise dignify LGBT individuals as long as such claims could be attributed to their (no doubt sincerely held) religious beliefs.

Deal claimed that he wasn’t responding to pressure from business entities like the NBA, Disney and Salesforce…and we proceeded to roll our eyes.

Still, a campaign created by TBWA\Paris to promote France’s Inter-LGBT organization ahead of this summer’s pride events reminds us that young gay people continue to face challenges that are not so familiar to the rest of us.

That was a pretty comprehensive first-person account of various experiences that LGBT people still face, ranging from the judgment of parents to the taunts of schoolchildren.

We also like how the “obstacle course” becomes quite literal at the end via a set of schoolyard monkey bars.

FWIW, one of our gay friends called the work “dramatic.” But then it’s French…and in far too many places around the world, such conflicts can eventually lead to violence.

Aren’t dumb bullies, like, the worst?
